This summer has sent strong Tropical Storms to many of our programmes. While most have weathered the storms without significant damage, two of our schools have suffered severe damage from the heavy rain, requiring urgent repair.
Typhoon Carina (also known as Typhoon Gaemi) swept over the northern islands of the Philippines this week. The heavy rain brought by the typhoon intensified already heavy monsoon rains, flooding Manila and the surrounding areas. According to news reports, 32 people died in the Philippines and there has been severe flooding1https://www.reuters.com/business/environment/typhoon-gaemi-lashes-southeast-china-after-pounding-taiwan-flooding-philippines-2024-07-26/#:~:text=in%20the%20philippines%2C%20the%20storm%20killed%2032%20people%2C%20with%20the%20capital%20manila%20declaring%20a%20%22state%20of%20calamity%22%20after%20widespread%20flooding.%20a%20marine%20tanker%20carrying%20industrial%20fuel%20also%20sank%20in%20rough%20seas%20off%20the%20philippines. and landslides in the mountains.
Adlas Boystown has suffered damaged to several buildings, with the rooves leaking and deteriorating rapidly in the heavy rain. All schools in the northern Philippine islands suspended classes for the week as flooding made travel impossible. The children were unable to continue with classes all week until the flooding subsided.
The cost of repair is £1,970.
Can you help us repair these rooves?
The recent tropical storm season in Honduras has also been severe. The most recent storms have brought high winds and heavy rains, damaging infrastructure.
We urgently need to repair damage to the multi-purpose gymnasium roof in Tegucigalpa Girlstown. The roof has deteriorated so rapidly during heavy rain that it is unsafe to use.
We need £10,500 urgently to repair the roof so that the girls can safely use the gymnasium again. This will ensure their physical education is uninterrupted.
The photo to the right shows the gymnasium being used for school assembly before the rain damage caused the roof to leak and deteriorate.
