All children deserve a good start in life and the chance to reach their potential and be the best they can be. With the help of our donors we can ensure that the poorest children around the world have an equal chance - a proper childhood, access to education, good nutrition, healthcare and the opportunity to develop skills and grow into independence.

Through all the Sisters of Mary programmes we share in the successes of the children and celebrate their triumphs in school. We are constantly in awe of their achievements as they move into the working world but in May this year we were particularly delighted to celebrate the accomplishments of Eden Cabrera, graduate of the girls school in Biga, Philippines.

Eden joined the Sisters of Mary school in the Philippines at the age of 11 in 1993 and she came from a large family living in desperate poverty in the slums of Cavite. With the chance of a place at school and regular meals she grew in confidence, thrived in her studies and did well in her exams. After leaving school in 1998 with the help of the Sisters she found work in a local company. Whilst working she achieved a business degree through part time study and became a qualified accountant registered in the Philippines and with the ICAEW in the UK.

Following some years as partner in an accountancy practice supporting her family and her siblings she turned her talents to teaching other accountants. Completing the World Bank ‘Training of Trainers programme’ she is now also a trained accreditor within the Philippines and based at De La Salle University-Dasmarinas has received its outstanding Teacher of the Accountancy Department award seven years running.

In May this year she received the ultimate recognition of her work in the presentation of the PwC National Accounting Teacher Award for her contributions to accountancy teaching. What an achievement!

Of her considerable success she says ‘ I thank my benefactors  and the Sisters of Mary for their selfless work in taking care of me and giving me quality education and strong values which guide me in performing my job as a teacher’.
