Help us ensure our girls can take their National Exams

For the first time, World Villages for Children has secured additional match funding to support our education work. We are taking part in the Big Give’s Women and Girls’ Match Fund which commences on 10 October 2024, to raise funds to support an urgent need for the poor girls at our school in Tanzania.

Girls’ education

Poverty disproportionately affects women and girls and they have little control over their lives. Girls get less food and receive less education than their male counterparts. And girls are deeply affected by the violence and practical difficulties of living in extreme deprivation 1The World Bank on Girls Education.

Educating these girls has always been one of our highest priorities. When we remove barriers to education and give girls equal access to safe schooling, we offer them the chance to learn the skills that will empower them and help them (and their families) to flourish in poverty free lives.

In Tanzania we have witnessed very extreme poverty affecting women and girls the most

This is what we did in response to this extreme need:

  • Opened a new secondary school for  up to 1,000 poor girls aged 11-17 to address the gap in their education.
  • Started a training centre for older, out of school young women to teach them skills which will help them find work or build businesses to support themselves.
  • Opened a day-care centre so that young mothers can leave their vulnerable youngsters safely while they study or work.

Exam needs in Tanzania

Our secondary school in Kisarawe, Tanzania, currently cares for 910 of the country’s poorest girls, providing free, quality academic and vocational education.

The girls live at the school, with all their food, shelter and education needs provided. And while they learn, they are protected from the difficulties of their early lives. This includes violence, domestic responsibility, and early and forced marriage and child bearing.

Help us fund our girls’ national exam fees

The education provided is accredited by the Ministry of Education in Tanzania. This quality education upskills the girls for a better future. However, Tanzania requires all students to sit National Government exams each year to allow them to progress to the next grade.

These exams are not free. And so, we are urgently seeking support to pay for these National Examination fees for 460 girls in Form 2, 4 and 6 this year. This enables the girls to follow the national syllabus, sit their exams, and continue their studies with us. Ultimately our girls will graduate and secure good local employment. But they cannot qualify and complete secondary school without these exams.

Making twice the difference!

We are taking part in the Big Give Women and Girls Match Fund to raise funds to help our girls in Forms 2, 4 and 6 to sit their exams. Our target is £5,000 to cover the exam entrance fees for 460 girls.

We are delighted to be accepted for this appeal which launches at midday on 10 October and lasts one week – until 17 October. We are also thrilled to have secured match funding for £2,500 from a champion funder – but we need your help.

Donate and double your impact

When you donate to our Big Give Women and Girls appeal from 10 to 17 October, your donation will be doubled.  This means that your gift will make twice the difference to the girls in our care, helping them to sit their exams and progress their learning.

Can you make a donation and help us to achieve our target?
