Miriam's life

Miriam is from Lempira in Honduras. She is 12 years old and lives with her grandmother since her mother left. Their house is very small and is made from clay. When it rains, the house floods with water.

Climate change means that there is a lot more rain and many storms in Honduras. Although her grandmother works so hard to help her by labouring as a tenant farmer on a nearby farm, the crops grown by the family are affected by the bad weather and fail repeatedly, meaning they having nothing to eat and no way to make a living.

The Sisters of Mary visited Miriam in her community late last year and were very moved by her difficulties. Thanks to gifts in wills and generous donations from our supporters we were able to fund a place for her at our girls school in Tegucigalpa Girlstown and she joined the Sisters in January 2025.

Looking towards a brighter future

Her grandmother advised her that  “you will learn so much there – you can be a good person with success in the future

Miriam now has a safe place to sleep at school. She enjoys three balanced meals a day, all the books and learning supplies she needs, uniform, shoes, and good teachers to help her learn.

She has a chance to fulfil her dreams and help her grandmother by getting a good job one day.

She says “I feel better staying here. I don’t lack anything and I want to give thanks for this opportunity. I want to give thanks to the Sisters of Mary and to all the people that help us.
