Bernadette at home

Living without

Bernadette is 13 years old and lives in one of the poorest communities of the Philippines. She has always known the meaning of hard work and sacrifice. Her loving parents Melanie and Bernie worked hard as tenant farmers, to provide for their seven children but it was a very difficult life. On a daily basis, as the fourth child of seven, Bernadette was accustomed to making do with very little, sharing every necessity from clothes to school supplies and even shampoo. Sometimes the smallest things were the hardest to bear.

“Life back home was challenging. We could only afford sachet shampoos, which had to be shared one small sachet amongst all seven of us and only one per week. On the days when we couldn’t afford even a sachet, we would resort to using a bar of soap, making the best of the little we had”.

Bernadette had no hope or expectations for a better future away from poverty until she met the Sisters in early 2024. They were moved by the difficulties of this family and thanks to the support of our generous donors we were able to fund a place for Bernadette at the Sisters school in Biga and she joined in July 2024.

A new life in her own words:

“When I arrived at the Sisters of Mary school I was overwhelmed by the sense of community and the kindness of the Sisters. Sister Myla, my mother-Sister, handed me a bag filled with essentials. Among these items was a bottle of shampoo – my very own bottle!

For the first time in my life, I held a full bottle of shampoo that was just for me. The simple luxury brought tears to my eyes. I felt an immense sense of gratitude. It wasn’t just about the shampoo, it was a symbol of the care and love that the Sisters showed me”.

Every time I use my shampoo I am reminded of the kindness and generosity that has been extended to me. It inspires me to work hard and make the most of the opportunities I have been given”.

As a grade 7 student I am determined to excel in my studies. I dream of being successful so I can help my family. Everyday I use my shampoo I am filled with deep gratitude to you our dear benefactors for helping me to make a difference in my life”.
