In January 2025, Action in Africa, a UK-based charity that supports disadvantaged children and women in local community projects in northern Tanzania, contacted the World Villages team to see if we could help two young women from their community in Nyaishozi, Tanzania.
Action in Africa supports schools and community groups, ensuring that children have access to primary and secondary school and meets needs ranging from education to healthcare provision. While many more children are in school as a result, there are young women within the wider community who have been unable to complete secondary school for a variety of reasons. Many of these young women face increasing challenges to provide for themselves and their families.
We connected Action in Africa’s team in Nyaishozi with our Sisters of Mary training centre in Dar es Salaam. Thanks to availability for new trainees at the Sisters’ Kiluvya training centre, and the quick action of the Sisters, within a few short weeks, we were delighted to hear that two young women, Edina and Avirath (pictured left), had been accepted for a six month vocational training programme.
Neither Edina or Avirath have been able to complete secondary school, so the opportunity to receive accredited vocational training with a VETA certificate will dramatically improve their chances of good employment. This will raise their earning potential and give them the skills and knowledge they need to support themselves and their families.
On 23 March Carey from our team was delighted to meet Edina and Avirath in Kiluvya on a programme visit. They are now taking courses in sewing and tailoring. Having arrived just two weeks before we met them in person, they are still settling into the training centre but seem to be adjusting well to their new life.
Action in Africa “provides help with education, healthcare and one-off projects to the most needy in the communities of Nyaishozi and Mtandika, in Tanzania, regardless of faith, colour or ethnic background”. Action in Africa’s trustees in the UK support their local committees who oversee day-to-day activities in Nyaishozi and Mtandika with fundraising and awareness raising of poverty in Tanzania.
By connecting with organisations like Action in Africa, with whom we share a close set of values and vision, we are able to connect our Tanzanian education programmes with those in the wider community who are most in need. Community contacts are the bedrock of our work with more rural communities in Tanzania, helping us to reach new regions and new families, so we can provide vital support to these families and welcome their children into our schools.
We are delighted that we were able to work with Action in Africa by funding places for Edina and Avirath with the Sisters.
We are so excited to see the young women safe and happy and progressing in their studies and we are very hopeful for what they will be able to achieve when they graduate with their training qualifications later in the year.
