In January 2025, Action in Africa, a UK-based charity that supports disadvantaged children and women in local community projects in northern Tanzania, contacted the World Villages team to seek help for two young women from their community in Nyaishozi, Tanzania.
Action in Africa supports schools and community groups, ensuring that children have access to primary and secondary school and meets needs ranging from education to healthcare provision. While many more children are in school as a result, there are young women within the wider community who have been unable to complete secondary school for a variety of reasons. Many of these young women face increasing challenges to provide for themselves and their families. At World Villages for Children we work to address these challenges and so we were pleased to be able to offer two of these young women, Edina and Avirath a life changing place at our Sisters of Mary training centre in Kiluvya.

Thanks to availability of new training places funded by our supporters, and the quick action of the Sisters, within a few short weeks, we were delighted to hear that Edina and Avirath (pictured left), had been accepted for a six month vocational training programme.
Neither Edina or Avirath had been able to complete secondary school, so the opportunity to receive accredited vocational training with a VETA certificate would dramatically improve their chances of good employment, increase their earning potential and give them the skills and knowledge they need to support themselves and their families.
On 23 March 2025 Carey from our team was delighted to meet Edina and Avirath in Kiluvya on a programme visit. They had just arrived at the centre but were already taking courses in sewing and tailoring and settling happily into their new life, full of new hope for the future.

Action in Africa “provides help with education, healthcare and one-off projects to the most needy in the communities of Nyaishozi and Mtandika, in Tanzania, regardless of faith, colour or ethnic background”. Action in Africa’s trustees in the UK support their local committees who oversee day-to-day activities in Nyaishozi and Mtandika with fundraising and awareness raising of poverty in Tanzania.
By collaborating with organisations like Action in Africa, with whom we share a close set of values and vision, we are able to connect our Tanzanian education programmes with those in the wider community who are most in need. Community contacts are the bedrock of our work with more rural communities in Tanzania, helping us to reach new regions and new families, so we can provide vital support to these families and welcome their children into our schools.

None of this life changing work would be possible without the generous supporters at World Villages for Children who fund the training places at this centre. We were so pleased to be a part of Edina and Avirath’s journey and to see them have the opportunity to flourish with their skills.
With sewing and tailoring, as well as business skills, they will be empowered to run a business and live independently, able to support themselves and their families. Over time, their education will positively impact more than just themselves. Their children will have a brighter future ahead and will have better opportunities thanks to their mothers’ education.

After a six month training course with our Sisters, specialising in tailoring and fashion design, Edina and Avirath graduated from the Kiluvya Training Centre in June 2025 with a certificate of completion accredited by VETA. What a wonderful achievement!
When they return home, they plan to join up with two other young women currently completing a sewing course, to start their own small sewing business in Nyaishozi.
Thanks to the collaboration of both charities these young ladies will have the tools they need to build their new business and earn a living to support themselves and their families out of poverty.
Thank you to the Action in Africa for working with us to end poverty through education!
